What curriculum support is available?

Our experienced music specialists are available to work alongside teachers to support National Curriculum music lessons to schools in Newcastle. The service has an emphasis on professional development of teachers, particularly the non-specialist, and this could involve team teaching, coaching, observing and feeding back.

What support is offered at key stages 3 and 4?

At Key Stage 3 and 4 we offer support for the delivery of the QCA Scheme of Work or to provide additional expertise for GCSE and A Level classes, particularly in Music Technology, Composing or Performing.

Support can be provided on an on-going basis throughout the year, or for particular short-term projects.

Do you offer any workshops?

We offer a comprehensive programme of twelve workshops at foundation level, key stage 1 and key stage 2 link the the themes:

  • keeping safe and healthy
  • musical literacy
  • knowledge and understanding of the world
  • creative curriculum

Each workshop team consists of two or three skilled teachers/musicians. Workshops last approximately one hour.

What is the Singing School programme?

The Singing Schools programme offers schools a progressive whole-school singing programme which uses a supporting resource. The resource includes songbooks with accompanying CD and music, lyrics for pupils and an in built reward system. Schools can decide which class or year group to target initially, perhaps with an early emphasis on Key Stage 2. With the support of our vocal teachers, pupils learn a core programme of songs. Staff development is also a key element of the programme which will enable teachers to lead and support the project.

What is the Band in a Box programme?

Band in a Box is a number of 6 week workshop programmes designed for Key Stage 2 pupils.

Each programme aims to be an exciting and progressive experience, culminating in a class performance. Newcastle Music Service staff work in collaboration with the class teacher to incorporate elements of in-service training. This is to enable further work to be developed after the programme.

Each programme includes:

  • Six one-hour workshop sessions delivered by two Newcastle Music Service staff with support from the class teacher
  • Use of all Band in a Box instruments in schools for the duration of the programme
  • An intensive musical experience for pupils which incorporates instrumental/vocal skill development and performance opportunities
